How do you calculate the price of a translation?

Our standard policy is to charge per source word. Exceptions may be made when the source format is non-editable and thus it is difficult to take a source word count. In such cases, the price is calculated per target word count. We are, nevertheless, willing to address the requirements of our clients and to calculate the price based on a count of characters, lines or standard pages.

Prices are calculated by taking the following into consideration:

  • Language combination
  • Number of words, number of repeating segments
  • Turn-around time
  • Source format
  • Formatting and design requirements
  • Type of text: general or specialised
  • Other special requirements

There is a minimum charge for every order.

How long does the translation process take?

The key factor determining the time is the volume of the source text. This is not however the only criterion. The delivery time also depends on the format of the source text, on how specific the text is, additional client requirements regarding the layout of text, etc. A standard daily output for a translator is about 2000 words. If however, your language combination is rare and one which only very few translators work with or your text is a very complex one which we can only entrust to translators with very specific qualifications, the delivery time in such cases will depend on the availability of suitable translators for that specific period of time. Fortunately, we have an extensive database of qualified and carefully selected translators, and consequently, it is only in very rare cases that we have to delay the start of a project due to a lack of translators.

On the other hand, if a translation is urgent, the text is divided among a few translators who work as a team; using translation memories and quality assurance programmes ensures consistency of terminology. Moreover, one editor specifically works on the project to ensure that the style and terminology of the text is consistent. Such division of a project allows us to speed up the delivery.

At the request of a client we can also deliver very urgent orders. In such cases, the translations are not edited and proofread. This service is offered when a client simply needs to know the content of the text but is not going to publish it.

We are ready to make every effort to meet your needs. We would nevertheless like to remind you that it is only by having enough time for a translation that we can provide you with a product of sufficient quality. Like any other product or service, translation requires enough time to go through all the necessary project stages and processes. Both you and we want a translation of the highest quality.

Who does the translating in your company? Do you have enough in-house translators to cover all the language combinations you offer?

We employ translators, editors, proofreaders, and QA specialists of various languages, most of whom are freelancers. For the translation services we provide, it is not sufficient to have an excellent knowledge of the source and target languages; it is absolutely vital to have a good understanding of the subject area you undertake to translate. That is why all our resources are highly experienced, skilled experts who specialise in certain translation areas. Therefore, we employ medical doctors, engineers, IT specialists, etc. who have extensive experience in translation along with professional linguists. Most of our linguists are native speakers of the target language and live in a country where this language is spoken.

Our large team of translators consists of more than 300 specialists. Diskusija has invested a great deal of time and effort into recruiting, testing and training the best resources by applying our very strict selection procedure.

Furthermore, some projects are done in cooperation with our partner companies from different countries. Our membership of international organisations enables us to enlarge the range of services and languages we can provide to our valuable clients.

Do you do machine translations?

Even if machine translation has advanced lately and an increasing amount of translations are performed by machines, we do not use machine translation in our work. Qualified and experienced translators perform all our translations.

There might still be some confusion between machine translation and computer-assisted translation (CAT) when a human translator translates text using software that is intended to accelerate and facilitate the translation process. We use CAT tools a lot in our work since they help to reduce the time we need for translation, ensure the consistency of terminology and, more importantly this allows us to reduce the price of the service.

We need a translation of medical/technical/legal text. Do you translate specialised texts?

Diskusija translates texts in a variety of fields. We provide Document Translation, Technical Translation, IT & Telecom Translation, Medical translation, Legal translation, Financial Translation, Marketing Translation.

It is very important that the person who translates understands the source text and the specific area. Therefore all of Diskusija’s translators specialise in certain translation areas. Our extensive team of translators consists not only of certificated translators, but also of technicians, engineers, medical doctors, legal professionals, and financial experts, all of whom are professionals in their field with a comprehensive professional knowledge and excellent language skills as well as extensive translation experience. Consequently we are able to offer translation in various fields and at various levels of complexity.

Why does a translation have to be edited? Isn’t the translator qualified enough to do a translation of suitable quality right away?

Every translation project is a multi-step process and at least three people work on each project: project manager, translator and editor/proofreader.

Even if only highly qualified translators do our translations, we should not forget that the translator is human and sometimes makes mistakes (Errare humanum est). The translator is doing hard intellectual work in trying to accurately understand and convey the meaning of the source text. In spite of every effort and experience, there is the possibility of omitting something, of making a mistake or interpreting something wrongly and of not even noticing your own mistakes. Besides, the written text is a domain of infinite improvement and perfection when it comes to style, language fluency and accuracy. That’s why text editing and proofreading is vital.

While checking the translation, the editor compares it with the source language text to identify and correct any inaccuracies, language mistakes, style and terminology inconsistencies, adherence to instructions, and other possible oversights on the part of the original translator. If two or more translators have worked on the text, the editor should also ensure that the different translations are consistent.

Performing all those processes ensures translation quality and the work of a translator is only one link in the entire chain.

Can you certify a translation?

Diskusija offers certified translation services.
There are no sworn translators in our country. Therefore, translations are certified by translation companies with their seal and the signature of a translator or a representative of the company.

Diskusija is entitled to certify all translations we provide.

You can trust us. Diskusija always ensures the confidentiality of our clients’ information. All our in-house staff and external translators, proofreaders, and editors are bound by confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements.
