CAT Tools

Computer assisted translation is a form of translation where a human translator translates a text using special software to support and facilitate the translation process.

Computer assisted translation tools work based on translation memory, i. e. a database where matches of the original text and the translated text are stored. CAT tools divide the translated text into units called ‘segments’. When a translator works with the source document, the tool opens the segments one after another and, if an identical or close match is found in the available translation memory, the tool suggests a translation of the segment and the translator can accept or edit the suggested segment accordingly. If there is no match in the database, the translator simply translates a new segment and the translation tool stores it in the translation memory. This speeds up the work of translator considerably and, even more significantly, the consistency of terminology and style is ensured. This is extremely important while working on continuing projects where different translators work on projects for the same client at different times. For this reason Diskusija always keeps translation memories of its regular clients so that these can be used for future translations. Translation memory allows Diskusija to maintain a consistent standard of quality throughout a translation project while at the same time lowering the costs and time needed to complete each project.

CAT tools have even more useful features such as analysing and assessing the volume of the text to be translated, performing various quality control tasks (checking the spelling, numbers, tags, etc.) and terminology management. They even allow for the compilation of TM databases based on previously translated texts. This process, known as alignment, involves matching a previously created translation with its source file.

Moreover, CAT tools allow for working with files in various formats (doc, docx, xls, ppt, html, xml, mif, inx, etc.) and returning the translated documents to the client in their original formats.

DISKUSIJA works with the following CAT tools

  • SDL Trados Studio
  • SDLX
  • MemoQ
  • Wordfast

Client Benefits

Diskusija uses CAT tools for the translation of the majority of its projects as every text can have repeated segments or terms. In addition, Diskusija stores the translation memory databases of each client separately. The more projects we do, the larger our database becomes, the greater the likelihood of repeated segments is, and therefore the lower the number of words that need to be translated in new projects. This means a lower cost of translation for the client and a shorter translation time.

Furthermore, an extensive translation memory allows for greater consistency of translation, especially when more than one translator is working on a single project.
